Adult Tricycle Safety

Adult tricycles are sport and transportation vehicles. While riding them, you should always adhere to state and municipal bicycle regulations. You are responsible not only for your own safety but also for that of other road users.

BEFORE YOU RIDE:

  1. Make sure your adult tricycle is equipped with basic safety accessories such as bicycle flags, lights, etc. Remember to wear a bicycle helmet to protect the most important part of your body, your head.
  2. Make sure your trike tires are filled with air to the correct pressure levels.
  3. Test your trike brakes to ensure they are working properly.
  4. Ensure handlebars are tight and the ends are plugged.
  5. Check the saddle is tight.
  6. Check there is no resistance on your adult tricycle by moving it backward and forward.

WHILE YOU ARE RIDING:

  1. Always start with slow pace until you are comfortable with the ride, then turn and stop.
  2. Handling an adult tricycle is quite different from handling a bicycle. When you are making a turn, you cannot lean over as you would when riding on two wheels. You have to make sure all three wheels are on the ground at all times.
  3. Always remember that the widest point for an adult tricycle is at the rear. If the front of your trike easily passes an obstacle or narrow opening, make sure the rear of the trike will clear it too. Always make sure you give sufficient clearance to the edge of the road or sidewalk.
  4. Do not make sudden changes of direction because this will unbalance your adult tricycle and may lead to an accident.
  5. Avoid riding at night or at times of reduced visibility. If it is unavoidable, ensure your adult tricycle is equipped with front and rear lights for safety purposes.

The above are fundamental precautions that all adult tricycle riders should take into consideration. While riding gives us great fun, we should not forget that safety always comes first.

Enjoy your ride!
