I will admit it. I don’t know bike tools from trike jewels. My idea of repairing something is to call a local repairman. I am about as uncoordinated as anyone could possibly be. But I do like my bicycle. There are days when I bicycle twenty miles or more. Being nearly seventy years old, this is no simple feat, but I’ve been doing it since I was six years old, when I got my first two wheeler.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that I really wanted to push myself. I decided to bicycle from my home in Worcester, Massachusetts, to the capital, Boston. That’s a good forty, maybe fifty miles, but it was a beautiful fall day. It couldn’t have been over sixty degrees.

I got all my gear together, and took off. Everything was going great until the inevitable happened. Rear tire. Flat as could be. Oh well, I’ve dealt with that a thousand times before. I always carry tools, a pump, and tire patches.

I pulled over and opened up my pannier. There was my pump that I bought in 1998. It hasn’t failed me yet. And fortunately, I had just bought a new pack of patches. But where was my wrench? Oh no! I had left it on my kitchen counter when I had tried to repair the leaking kitchen faucet. So what do I do now?

I started walking. I must have walked at least six miles. But like a mirage, I saw it. A bicycle shop! They had to have wrenches. I walked in, and even thought about getting rid of old Betsey, and getting a new bicycle. No, she’s been with me too long. All I needed was a wrench, and I could be on my way.

I told the clerk what I needed, and he showed me the Topeak Alien II 26-Function Bicycle Tool. More money than I wanted to spend. But I took a close look at it. This was a quality tool.
