|My Overall Rating:|
Just because a child is immobilized and forced to spend the better part of their life in a wheelchair, doesn’t mean that they lose the sense of fun and adventure that in inherent in all little ones, yet there are precious few wheelchair options on the market that cater to that sense of childhood wonder. That may have changed with the release of the Invacare XLT JR., a recumbent style handcylce that adds a sporty sense of style that no standard wheelchair can match.
That’s not to say that the Invacare XLT JR. can only be used as a wheelchair option, as it’s also a fun excelerator handcyle that will appeal to all kids and is a perfect option for adults who already own the full sized version of the XLT, to share the joy of recumbent cycling with their kids.
The XLT is designed for kids aged 5 up to small adult size, and is constructed of an extremely lightweight aluminum frame with an adjustable angle back. The frame itself comes in a variety of cool sounding colors that the little ones will love, with names like Cosmic Blue, Electric Red, Bubblegum Pink and Fruit Fusion. The XLT is built for comfort and speed, but have safety features that make it safe for kids; the wheels are 20 inch cruisers that have a5 degrees of camber which provides incredible stability when even when the cycle is at top speed and cornering.
Both the seats and footrests are fully adjustable to allow user from 38”-60” to have a comfortable fit and smooth ride. The XLT is “powered” by a 7 speed Shimano hub and the gear shift is positioned in an area that is very easy to reach. The hand pedals can be set horizontally or vertically, with the hands-on reversing drum brake providing a quick, smooth stop if needed.
The base model of the XLT JR. starts at around $2,159, but there are a whole number of add-ons and extended safety features that can be put on to customize the look and design of the handcyle. Those upgrades run from around $20 all the way up to $360, with items like a water bottle and cage, crutch holder and strap and a bike rack trailer hitch being included in that price range. The unit is a well-constructed, extremely well reviewed handcycle, but the asking price is what may be the toughest part for many people to swallow, but many will also agree that it’s hard to put a price on the happiness of your child.
